Heck yeah it's ugly, but how awesome is this jacket!!!
The funny thing about objects that are specific to a certain period, in this case the 80's, is that if enough time passes we see it differently. There was a time when it would be considered "normal" to wear this but today it's more of an artifact loaded with nostalgia and irony. Now we can appreciate it as a garment representative of the fashion of a time gone by. I remember when this style of jacket was popular, but even back then I also remember thinking it was kinda gross, flashy and ultra tacky . However through the filter of 2012, I can see and appreciate it's colour, pattern(s) and construction. Don't get me wrong, it still looks like a clown and a beatnik threw up all over an otherwise boring bomber jacket, but that's seems to be part of it's appeal. So I'm left wondering about this concept of changing perceptions around trends and objects. What will appeal to us 20 years from now? what will we find boring? what will we find ironic?
